In France, children try to stick a picture of a fish on their friends' back. When the joke is discovered, they shout "Poisson d'avril!" Ha!
Happy April Fool's Day from us folks at People Power Press!

Tell Your Story with ChattySnaps Keychains November 30 2017
Introducing ChattySnaps Keychain
This totally unique button keychain is turning the keychain world on its head, and we want to shout about ChattySnaps from the rooftops!
Why are ChattySnaps so special?
ChattySnaps Keychains allow you to sport not one, not two, but THREE buttons at a time and if that's not wild enough, the buttons are easily interchangeable so you can change your keychain as often as you change your socks :)
Just snap off the old, and snap on the new.
How do ChattySnaps Keychains Work?
Making your very own ChattySnaps button is a breeze. The buttons are made exactly like a standard pinback button, and even use standard shells and mylar.
- Place your shell, artwork, and mylar into the button press.
- Press like usual
- Put in the ChattySnaps back into the button press, just like you would with a pinned back. Make sure the “snappy” side is facing down.
- Press, and Voila!
- Snap the buttons onto your key ring strap
- Smile, because you are now the proud owner of a ChattySnaps Keychain :)
Stay tuned for the ChattySnaps How-To Video on the Button Guy YouTube Channel! You'll see how making button keychians can be a SNAP :)

Shadowlands: Glow in the Dark Buttons for Toronto Fringe Festival July 14 2017

Savanna Harvey of Pretentious Productions is the writer and star of this experimental theater piece, which runs until July 16th in Toronto.
These amazing Custom 1-1/2" Glow in the Dark Buttons are made with Dura-Larilm (instead of mylar) in combination with a Glow in the Dark material (instead of paper).
The end effect is spooky and perfect for this play, which is staged in total darkness!!
The Graphic Designer behind these pinbacks in the very clever Alex Kirkpatrick who did an amazing job at capturing the mood of the production in a pinback button series which is no small feat! Check out more of Alex's work here.

Artist and Producer Daiza Shines with New Music and Custom Sparkly Buttons July 13 2017
Daiza is a musician based in Boston. She released her first single Metal Mouth this past March and released another single Crying Blanks in April.
The art-electronic producer and artist is currently doing shows to promote her new music and we got involved to help her make some unique concert merch.
She designed these beautiful cards with custom 1.25" buttons for a show. We see a lot of custom orders come through our shop, but this one definitely caught our eye.
A double-sided pink card has one of two custom sparkly buttons attached and branded with all Daiza's contact information, including a QR code. We kind of love them!
Holographic Buttons with Custom Printing
The sparkly effect is from printing the artwork on Dura-Lar, a transparent film, and then placing over gold foil. You can read more about this process in this post about making holographic pinback buttons.
Check out Diaza and her music online:

Buttons for a Cause: The "More Than a Label" Slow Clothing Movement May 13 2017
A group of students from Acadia University is handing out buttons for a cause. They want these custom buttons to change the way people think about the clothing they buy and wear with a simple question: "Ask Me About My Sustainable Outfit!"
More Than a Label is a slow clothing movement that supports buying used clothing, repurposing the clothing you already have and buying items that are built to last.
The group had these custom buttons made to get people talking about their clothes. See someone wearing one of these buttons? Go ahead and ask them what the story is behind their clothes!
Visit More Than a Label on Facebook and Instagram to read the many clothing stories they have collected there too.
Create your own buttons for a cause to get the word out and for fundraising
Are you thinking about buttons for a cause that's near and dear to your heart? Buttons are a great way to share your message. A single button let's people see your message while also inviting folks to ask questions if they are interested in learning more. You can promote your cause without saying a word!
Buttons for a cause like these ones from More Than a Label can also be a great fundraising idea. Your supporters can purchase a button, which helps raise funds for your cause, but has the added bonus in that when they wear the pin they are helping you spread your message.
It's easy to design custom buttons with free online tools
And designing your button is very easy with some great tools available online. Check out the free online button design program The Button Designer to create simple message pins in no time. Making Metallic Silver & Gold Buttons with Dura-Lar April 26 2017
We're really excited about making metallic gold and silver buttons with Dura-Lar!!
Using Dura-Lar Film is the easiest way to make Do-It-Yourself buttons that look lavish and luxurious.
In this video, Dura-Lar is used with Gold and Silver Reversible Metallic Dura-Lar to make gorgeous, shiny, pinback buttons that are great for holidays and special occasions. Check it out!
The SILVER & GOLD DURA-LAR used in this video is reversible, with gold on one side and silver on the other. The Metallic Dura-Lar Foil is 2mm thick, comes in standard 8.5 x 11" sheets, and has an EXTREMELY reflective mirror-like finish. Doesn't that sound awesome for a button??!
**When making Dura-Lar Buttons, it is the Glossy or Matte Dura-Lar that goes through the printer, and NOT the metallic Dura-Lar! The metallic Dura-Lar foil goes behind the transparent Dura-Lar film. **

Great Ideas: Collage Buttons! February 23 2017
Check out these beautiful buttons made by artist Sydney Rose!
Collage is Sydney's medium of choice for most of her art practice (Golden Encyclopedias from the 60's and 70's are her favourite source for images)
"As life gets more busy, I'm always looking at ways to hammer out ideas faster. I've also been looking for a way to produce small collages that can be distributed at a lower price point. The decision to get a button press was super random but it has been incredibly satisfying. It's so easy to produce collages quickly, without any adhesive. Like a sketch book."
We love the result!

1. Choose Your Artwork: Find a background and save it to your computer. I chose this one because it has a nice framing element that will showcase the name. A great place for free pattern and backgrounds is Public Domain Pictures
2. Upload Your Artwork: Create a FREE account on the Button Guy Online Button Designer. Choose which size of button you'd like to make and upload your pattern.
3. Design Your Button: Choose which lines of text you would like to be visible and pick a font and a font colour. Make sure it stands out against the background. (Tip: Change the background colour from the default Yellow to a colour that matches your uploaded artwork) |
|
4. Save Your Designs: Once you have finished adding a name click the [Save Button] Button, your design is now saved and you can change the text without uploading the background again. Repeat these steps until you have all your buttons - you can see them all in "Buttons Overview". |

Great Ideas: Displays for your Button Business September 19 2016
We get a lot of question from our busy button makers about running your own button business and one of them is about displaying buttons for sale. We have some bright ideas no matter what size, style and type of product you're making!
Boards:
Buttons:
Bulletin boards are a great way to display buttons because you can stick the pins right in! You can also DIY a bulletin board by covering foam board with fabric or paper, you could even add a fancy frame!
This kind of display works well if you have lots of different designs to choose from!
Magnets:
We found that the best way to display magnets is by having them do what they do best - STICK! Buttons look great displayed on a board - you can even make your own out of a cookie sheet. Since magnets stick to almost anything metal you can get creative - why not display them on a locker door or even a paint can?
Binders:
Most Everything:
If you have lots of different designs that you want to categorize, or lots of different types of products that won't all fit on a board - why not display your buttons in a button binder! We've made this one from page protectors designed for business cards which will fit anything up to a 2.5" button. The pockets will fit things that are harder to stick onto a board, like pocket mirrors, keychains, and bottle openers. If you choose a clear type, you'll be able to see easily what the back of each item is like!
This kind of display would be great for conventions too! You can use dividers to section your binder by theme and customers can browse it like a catalogue.
Bowls, Baskets and Bins:
If you have lots of different designs or items that you want to mix together, don't forget the tried and true basket-o-buttons! Lots of folks like to rummage through a little bowl to pick a favorite design (or two, or three!). Displaying your buttons in a cute container is a perfect solution if you're not very crafty, or ran out of time to come up with a different brilliant idea! Just make sure the pins on your buttons are closed - ouch!

What's your favorite pair of shoes?
Whether it's a crisp new pair of summer sneakers, or that trusty pair that have been through thick and thin (and a puddle or two...), it's nice to show your shoes that they're appreciated.
The best way to say "thanks shoes," is to make them a button of their very own!
DO-IT-YOURSELF SHOELACE BUTTONS
These snazzy DIY Shoelace Buttons are sure to put a spring in your step :)
If you want to try your hand at this great DIY project, take a peek at the How-To Video below courtesy of The Button Guy!
The Shoelace Buttons come in a ton of different sizes and all of the parts you need to make your own can be found on our website!
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "FLAT" & "INDENTED" SHOE LACE BUTTONS?
"Flat" Sneaker Buttons have a smooth, flat back from which the "shoelace clip" protrudes. These are great if you and your buttons like to let loose and dangle and jangle about.
"Indented" Sneaker Buttons have a recessed back, so the clip sits deep into the button. This, in turn, pulls your shoelace tighter and keeps the button nice and snug. These are great if you and your buttons like a nice, orderly, approach to self expression.
CUSTOM MADE SHOELACE BUTTONS
If you like these Shoelace Buttons but DIY isn't really your thing, Custom Shoe Lace Buttons are available too! Just send us an image, or have our design team create something awesome just for you!

DIY Project: Mystery Series Pocket Mirrors January 31 2016
We love books around here. We love to read them and normally wouldn't condone taking them apart, but we're going to make an exception with our latest craft project. The thing is, we have all these great looking books in the shop that we use to make our upcycled notebooks. But the pages inside don't always get to be reused.
Well, we've found the perfect way to salvage some of the pages from old vintage books - Mystery Series Pocket Mirrors!
If you have some old books or magazines, you can do the same. Parts for mirrors can be purchased on the same page where you order your button supplies.
As with any artwork you put in your button maker, just make sure the pages aren't so thick they will jam your machine. Then cut, press and carry.
And the images from these old books get to tell a story in a whole new way.

Recycle Fabric wtih Fabric Buttons! November 17 2015
Do you have some old clothes or fabric scraps lying around, but don't want to throw them away?
Beautiful fabrics can be used to make great pins, brooches or even earrings with your button maker! Get creative and upcycle some of the materials you have at home.
When using fabric to make buttons, you can get a more textured look to your button than the usual glossy finish that comes with using mylar and paper.
Before you get started, here are some things you should know about how to make fabric buttons with your button maker.
What kind of fabric to use with your button maker
When attempting to make fabric buttons you should know that not all fabric can be used with your button maker.
You need fabric with a high tensile strength - is able to be stretched - otherwise tearing can be a problem and your buttons will tear at the edges.
You will also have trouble pressing a button with fabric if the fabric is too thick. Anytime the fabric, paper or any material is too thick your machine will get jammed.
Testing fabric with your button maker
The only way to really know if your fabric will work with your button maker is to test it.
The button making process does not put a lot of pressure on the fabric, but do a small test before cutting or purchasing a large quantity of fabric.
Cutting your fabric
Use a piece of mylar as a guide for cutting your fabric with scissors unless you have a rotary cutter. A fabric pencil will work great to mark where you should cut your fabric.
Graphic punches that often come in button making kits do not work with fabric. Trying to feed fabric through a graphic punch is pretty impossible.
A rotary cutter can work with some types of fabric, but again you will want to test it with the fabric you are planning to use as cuts will differ depending on the kind of fabric.
It's great to switch up your buttons and try new things! Just remember to always test new materials before embarking on a big project!
Want more crafty ideas and tips for button makers? Check us out on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram! And of course we'd love for you to share your fabric button creations with us.

It’s Election Time: A Guide to Campaign Buttons June 24 2015
Well Canada, this is an election year. While we don’t know what day we will be headed to the polls to vote in the next federal election, we do know that buttons will be part of the plan for many candidates.
Buttons actually have a long history of being used by politicians during election campaigns. Abraham Lincoln and his opponents used a precursor to the pinback button in their election campaigns as far back as 1860.
So if you are running for office or involved as part of an election team for anyone running in the upcoming federal elections, you might want to think about using custom election buttons during your campaign.
Here are some ways that buttons can be used for political campaigns:
1) Identifying volunteers canvassing on behalf of the electoral candidate or political party
2) Low cost promotional hand-outs for supporters to wear and share along the campaign trail
3) Branding! Buttons can carry your message/slogan, your name and your colours to help people know who you are and what you stand for. And, if they wear one, it helps them tell others who they are voting for and what they stand for.
Which type of button should you order?
2.25” to 3” round buttons are the most commonly ordered custom campaign buttons, but if you stand for change or simply want to capture peoples’ attention, you might want to consider a more unusual shape (like Oval, Rectangle or Diamond).
What should you include in your design?
That’s really up to you, but common things to be included on a custom campaign button are:
1) The name of the candidate
2) The party he/she represents
3) The riding he/she represents
4) The year of the election
5) The colours of his/her party
6) A declaration of endorsement (usually along the outside/back edge), which declares who has sponsored/paid for the promotional materials and that the person in question is authorized to be campaigning on behalf of that party
Colour matching your party’s colours
We have made buttons for all of Canada’s major political parties so we know that having your buttons match your party’s official colours is very important.
If you are submitting your own design files, but colour matching is crucial, please tell us when you place your order. While we cannot guarantee “colour matching” (due to the limitations of our printers), we do a very good job of getting very close. This does, however, take a bit longer than a regular button job, so give us extra notice and we’ll make sure you get exactly what you want by the date you need it. You may also want to consider getting a physical proof shipped to you. If that is the case, we’ll need at least an extra week of lead time to account for shipping time and any edits that may need to be done before going to production.
Ways to create the design files for your custom button order:
If you are familiar with graphic design and using design programs, you can check out our free design templates.
If you aren’t a designer, you should check out the easy-to-use and free online button design software Button Designer.
We also provide design services and can create top notch campaign button designs for you in house. Pricing runs from $15 - $60 per design.
Want to make your own campaign buttons?
Here are some button maker kits that will make traditional sized campaign buttons:
If you already have a button maker, make sure you are well stocked with all the button parts you need when an election is called.
Not sure what you need, but just know you want to be election-ready?
We have lots of experience producing quality buttons in high volumes, have fast turnaround times, and ship all over Canada and beyond! Give us a call today and we can help you get what you need.

Great news for all button makers and button people in Montreal. Nic from The BUTTON SHOP is open in Montreal too. Checkout Nic's website:
Nic is possibly the best button maker I know but we never did have the button making Olympics we planned to see who really is the best. He's making custom buttons right there in Montreal and he is a very experienced button maker who can help and advise on any button making project. Ontario has had a button store for some time, in Toronto, but this is the first button store I have heard of in Quebec. He is stocking button makers, button machines and button parts right there in Ville-St-Laurent very close to the Du College Metro Station in Montreal.
This is what the store looked like in August 2014 but this closed and is now in the downtown.
Yes I don’t see a button shop either. But this was Google street view, it’s always out of date!
The new store was the one with the “Bieres” sign and next time I’m in Montreal I’m going to swing by and see how Nic is doing. I will provide a new update with the current picture soon. In the meantime lets support the Montreal Button Shop.
If your placing an order let Nic know you got his contact from The Button Guy.

Button Vending Machines – Put your button sales on automatic – Gumball machines for buttons! September 07 2013
Selling your button designs in stores can be a great way to launch your button business. But buttons are a low cost item that can walk very easily if you have them in a jar or on a board. Packaging buttons is a good way to go. You can make sets of matching buttons and put them on a display card or 4 in a bag with a header card. I will be writing a separate article about button packaging in due course. Another way to ensure you don’t loose buttons to pilfering is sell them using a button vending machine.
These machines are traditional gumball machines converted to take capsules. You can then add multiple buttons in a capsule or also put a special offer or a coupon code in the capsule. People enjoy putting in a coin and turning the handle to see what they are going to get. There is a nostalgia surrounding the gumball machines. Everyone remembers them from their childhood. Button vending machines work for you whilst you are somewhere else, maybe making or designing buttons, maybe at home tucked up in bed with a good book. Put your button sales on Automatic!
This is the flagship! The Beaver Meridian Gumball Machine is a very cool retro style solid metal machine in bright red and designed like a globe. I think it looks very cool. As with all these machines there are some options for the coin mechanism. You can go for a coin mechanism that takes a quarter, two quarters or even 4 quarters. If your in Canada you can have a loonie or toonie coin mechanism. You can even have 2 x $1 or 2 x $2. All these machines also have the option for TOKENS or FREE VEND options.
The above Button Vending Machine – Meridian is quite pricy ($600 – $800) and at 70 lbs it’s quite expensive to ship. But there are other options:
The Northern Beaver takes 1″ or 2″ or 3″ capsules. You can fit 3 1″ buttons or magnets in a 1″ acorn capsule. You can fit 3 buttons or magnets up to 1-3/4″ in a 2″ acorn capsule. The 3″ capsules are a quarter each so I find them a bit expensive but they do take a few 2-1/4″ buttons. The 2″ acorn capsules are only 5 cents each, the 1″ acorn capsules go down to 3 cents each. I see more opportunity in those than the 3″ buttons.
The Round Beaver has all the coin mechanism options but is only available for 1″ vending capsules. The stand is also an optional extra. They sit nicely on the counter and come with fixtures for bolting down or attaching a security wire (as do all Beaver vending machines). The Round Beaver you can pickup for around $150.
Marketing and promotion options using a Button Vending Machine.
Above I’m talking about selling buttons but there are also other uses. These machines have interchangeable coin mechanisms. Those coin mechanisms can have some interesting possibilities. The FREE VEND option is a coin mechanism that requires no coin. Just turn the handle and out pops the capsule. Why is this useful?
Think of putting a machine in a local venue like an art gallery or a café. When someone turns the handle they get a free button and an ad. That ad could lead potential clients to your store, your website or to your latest special offer. A great way to get customers coming to you.
What about TOKEN VENDING? Our mechanism takes a 0.984″ token which is a pretty standard token size. You can get tokens personalised, stamped with your website or your logo. You can send a token to your mailing list, give a token out at trade shows or even walk the streets and hand out your token. It will bring people to your store or event. Event and party organisers can use tokens to distribute “random” capsules that are a kind of lottery. What about a party where you have to find the person with the matching button. The Button Vending Machine keeps the mix random.
How do I promote my website or business with a Button Vending Machine.
Depends on your business ….. but let’s say you have a bicycle store for example. Come up with 5 or 10 slogans about cycling. I love my bike! Cyclists do it better! Watch for cyclists! etc. Make some cool designs, add a button or magnet business card so there are 2 buttons in the capsule. Get a Button Vending Machine with a $1 mechanism and set it up in your cycle shop. Your customers will like the slogan, buy the button and take home your business card for the fridge. If it cost a $1 they will appreciate it – If you give them away we all know how many end up in the garbage! Entertain your customers AND promote your business. The $1 coins will pay for the buttons and the machine in no time. This method can be adapted to almost ANY BUSINESS and it works.
