There Is No Honor in Killing
An honor killing is the act of murdering a family member or member of a social group (usually a woman or girl), due to the belief that the victim has dishonored the family or community.
Such perceived dishonor is typically the result of the following behaviors (or suspicion thereof): dressing inappropriately, wanting to marry by choice (especially if to a member of social group that is deemed inappropriate by the family/community, engaging in sexual acts outside of marriage, or engaging in any homosexual acts.
It is estimated by The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) that as many as 5,000 women and girls are killed each year by members of their own families. Women's groups in the Middle East and Southwest Asia suspect the actual number may be around four times greater.
